🚀 Getting Started

Herdy is a carpooling app made for Australia. It connects drivers heading somewhere with passengers going the same way — so everyone saves money, reduces their footprint, and maybe makes a new friend along the road. 🚗

Browsing and creating an account is completely free.
When you book a ride, you pay the driver a share of the trip costs plus a small service fee of 15% (minimum $1.50). This helps us keep Herdy running, secure, and constantly improving.
If you’re a driver, there’s no cost to post rides — you simply get paid when passengers join your trip and share the cost.

You can browse available rides without an account. But to see the details of a ride or to book or offer a ride, you’ll need to sign up — it only takes 1 or 2 minutes.

Yes! Herdy works anywhere in Australia — city to city, regional routes, weekend getaways, or one-way journeys. If you’re driving it, you can list it.

🧭 How Herdy Works

  1. Search for a ride by entering your origin, destination, and travel date
  2. Browse available rides and pick one that suits you
  3. Send a booking request to the driver, with the desired number of seats
  4. Once the driver accepts, your payment is captured and the ride is confirmed
  5. Chat with your driver at any time, meet at the agreed pickup point, and enjoy the ride!
  1. Post your trip — set your route, date, car plate number and price
  2. Receive and review booking requests from passengers
  3. Accept or decline each request
  4. Chat with your confirmed passengers before departure
  5. Complete the ride and get paid 🎉

Absolutely! You can switch roles any time — offer a ride when you’re driving, or book a seat when you need one.

💳 Payments

When you request to book a ride, you enter your credit or debit card details and authorise the payment.
Your card is not charged immediately. The payment is only captured if the driver accepts your booking request.

Once accepted, the payment is securely held. The funds are then released to the driver 1 week after the ride date, allowing time to manage any disputes if needed.

If the driver declines your booking request, no payment is captured and you won’t be charged.
All payments are processed securely via Stripe.

You can pay by credit or debit card. Apple Pay (ios) and Google Pay (Android) is also available if it’s set up on your device.

Drivers receive their payment 1 week after the ride date. This short delay allows time to manage any disputes before funds are released.

Herdy charges a 15% service fee (minimum $1.50) per booking. This fee is clearly displayed before you confirm your booking — no hidden surprises. The service fee is entirely refundable if the driver or the passenger cancels.

Yes. All payments are processed by Stripe, one of the world’s most trusted payment platforms. Herdy never stores your card details.

❌ Cancellations & Refunds

Cancellation Timing Refund
More than 24 hours before departure Full refund including service fee
Less than 24 hours before departure Full refund including service fee
No-show at pickup point No refund (driver is fully paid)

Note: At this stage, drivers do not receive compensation when a passenger cancels, regardless of timing. We appreciate your understanding as we continue to develop our policies.

If a driver cancels for any reason, you’ll receive a full refund including the service fee. You’ll be notified immediately so you can search for an alternative ride.

Open the app and raise a dispute (see Disputes section below). Our team will investigate and issue a full refund if the driver failed to show up without cancelling.

Refunds are processed within 1–5 business days, depending on your bank.

⚖️ Disputes

A dispute is a formal way to report a problem with a completed ride — for example, a driver who didn’t show up, a passenger who was a no-show, or a safety or conduct issue.

Both drivers and passengers can raise a dispute for any ride.

  1. Open the Herdy app
  2. Go to your Profile (bottom right)
  3. Tap Help & Feedback
  4. Select Issue with a recent ride
  5. Follow the prompts to describe the problem

Disputes must be submitted within 1 week of the ride date. After that window, the ride is considered completed and funds are released to the driver.

Our support team will review the case, may contact both parties for more information, and will resolve the dispute within a reasonable timeframe. Refunds or adjustments are applied based on the outcome.

If you believe a rating you received was unfair or abusive, contact us at support@herdy.com.au and we’ll review it.

🛡️ Safety & Trust

Safety is at the heart of Herdy. Every user must verify their phone number and email at registration. We also offer optional identity verification through Stripe Identity, giving your profile a verified badge that builds trust within the community.

Identity verification is an optional step where you upload a government-issued ID (e.g., driver’s licence or passport). Verified users receive a badge on their profile — it shows other users that you are who you say you are.

For now, only users who are 18 or older can book rides as passengers. Youalso must be 18 or older to offer rides as a driver. Your age is verified at registration based on your date of birth.

Yes! Every user has a public rating based on feedback from past rides. We encourage everyone to leave an honest rating after each trip — it keeps the Herdy community trustworthy and enjoyable for all.

Your safety always comes first. If you feel unsafe, leave the vehicle at the next safe stop and contact emergency services if needed (call 000 in Australia). You can report any incident through the app via Help & Feedback → Issue with a recent ride.

Yes. If you’ve had a bad experience, you can block another user directly from the app. Once blocked, you won’t see each other’s rides and won’t be able to contact each other.

⭐ Ratings

After each completed ride, both the driver and the passenger are invited to rate each other out of 5 stars and leave optional written feedback. Ratings are visible on user profiles.

No, it’s optional — but we strongly encourage it! Ratings help the community make informed decisions and reward great travel companions.

Contact us at support@herdy.com.au and we’ll review it.

💬 In-App Chat

Yes! Once a booking is confirmed, you and your travel companion can chat directly through the Herdy app. Use it to coordinate pickup details, confirm timing, discuss luggage space, or just say hello 👋

You can message the driver of a ride that interests you even before booking — to ask questions, clarify details, or make sure the trip fits your needs.

Once your booking is confirmed, the chat remains open so you and your travel companion can continue coordinating right up to departure.

🚗 For Drivers

When posting a ride, you set the total price for the booking (not per seat).

Herdy suggests a recommended price based on factors such as distance, route, and estimated travel costs. You can adjust the price within reasonable limits.

Herdy is built around fair cost-sharing — helping cover fuel, tolls, and trip expenses — not making a profit. Prices must reflect shared travel costs rather than commercial gain.

Yes! Carpooling is completely legal in Australia as long as drivers are sharing costs and not making a profit. Herdy is designed around exactly this principle.

In Australia, all registered vehicles are required to carry Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance, which covers personal injury. Since carpooling on Herdy is not a commercial activity — you're sharing a journey with others, not operating as a business — your standard comprehensive car insurance should apply.

We recommend checking with your insurer if you have any questions about your specific policy, but in most cases no additional coverage is required for social carpooling.

You can offer as many seats as your vehicle safely and legally allows — typically up to 3 or 4 passengers.

Yes. You review each booking request individually and can accept or decline before confirming. Your car, your choice.

Payments are released 1 week after the ride date to allow time for any disputes to be resolved. Funds are transferred directly to your nominated bank account via Stripe.

💸 Getting Paid (Drivers)

When a passenger books your ride and the journey is completed, your earnings are held securely in your Herdy balance.

From there, it's simple — you choose when to get paid.

Just head to:

Profile → Balance → Request Payout

Your money will be transferred directly to your nominated Australian bank account. No waiting around, no automatic schedules — you're in control.

Before your first payout, add your Australian bank account in the app:

Profile → Balance → Add Bank Account

You'll need your BSB and Account Number. Once saved, all future payouts go straight there.

Once you request a payout, funds typically arrive in your bank account within 1–3 business days, depending on your bank.

⏱️ Note: Earnings become available for payout 1 week after the ride date. This short window allows time to resolve any potential disputes before funds are released.

No minimum — you can request a payout for any amount sitting in your Herdy balance.

Great question — and an important one!

Herdy is built around cost-sharing, not profit-making. As a driver, you're splitting your fuel, tolls, and travel costs with passengers — not running a business or charging for a service.

In most cases, if the amount you collect from passengers does not exceed your actual trip costs, there is generally nothing to declare — it's a reimbursement, not income.

If you're unsure about your personal circumstances, we recommend seeking independent tax advice.

🎒 For Passengers

Before confirming your booking, make sure to review the departure time, the route, and the driver’s profile — including their rating and any past reviews.

If you have any questions, you can message the driver before booking to clarify details.

And remember, you can cancel at any time (see our cancellation policy for details).

If there are no rides available for your route and date, you can set up a ride alert.

Simply enter the route and travel date you’re looking for, and we’ll notify you as soon as a matching ride is posted. You’ll receive a push notification and an email so you don’t miss it.

Yes — you can book multiple seats in a single booking, subject to availability.

Just yourself and any luggage agreed upon with the driver. It’s always a good idea to confirm luggage space in the chat before your departure day.

👤 Account & Profile

Download the Herdy app, tap Sign Up, enter your phone number and date of birth, and follow the prompts. It takes less than 2 minutes!

Go to your Profile and tap Get your identity verified. You’ll be guided through a simple Stripe Identity verification process — just have your government-issued ID ready.

Right now, you need to be 18 or older to use Herdy.

We know Herdy could be super useful for teenagers (especially for school, sport, and weekend plans), but because safety comes first, we’re not opening the platform to under-18s until we can do it properly.

In the future, we may introduce a parent/guardian approval process and extra safeguards designed specifically for younger users. Until then, Herdy is 18+ only to keep the community secure and trusted.

You can delete your account at any time directly from the app in just a few taps.

We believe users should always be in control of their data — whatever the reason.

When you delete your account, your personal information is permanently removed or anonymised. Some transaction records are retained for legal and regulatory purposes, but they are fully depersonalised and cannot be linked back to you.

Go to your Profile → Profile Settings in the app to update your name, photo, bio, and other details.

🔔 Notifications

Herdy sends notifications for important events — booking confirmations, new messages, payment updates, ride reminders, and rating requests. You can manage notification preferences in your phone settings.

Make sure Herdy has permission to send notifications:

  • iPhone: Settings → Herdy → Notifications → Allow Notifications
